In Australian opal regions, silicon-bearing rock weathered over long geological periods. Silicon dioxide could then be absorbed by groundwater and transported through fine cracks, fissures, and cavities in the rock. Where this silicon-bearing fluid collected, it could gradually condense into a gel and finally form opal.

It is a slow natural process of rock, water, mineral components, and time.

Perhaps it is fitting that a finished opal then also does not appear static.
